WIAW #14 What I Don't Eat for Snacks.....Anymore

Can you believe we're almost half way through 2012?  Craziness! It will be my birthday this Friday, June 8th, and I'll be 28....that's too close to 30.

I loved planning my summer birthday parties with friends and staying up as late as possible (we were good to make it to midnight) while playing outside.  The group of us boys always found a way to stir up some trouble, but it was fun!

My mom would let me choose the drinks and snacks for the big night and I made sure to get a lot! I could polish off several cans of soda and Little Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pies and still have room for a few Rice Krispies Treats.  Needless to say, I was a heavier boy.
So simple in appearance, but there's like eleventy billion ingredients crammed inside!

I've learned a lot since then and now I limit my consumption of packaged food.  I certainly derive zero enjoyment from drinking a soda or eating something from Hostess, Little Debbie, Kelloggs, etc.

For June, the What I Ate Wednesday theme is Sensible Snacking; something I have no problem with doing every day! There are a few times I go a little overboard with snacking at work and hardly remember I ate that much.
Healthy Packaged Snack

If it's a packaged product, I only take what will fit in a small container and leave the rest of my at home. At the beginning of the week, I'll bring a supply of finger friendly fresh cut veggies like carrots, celery, daikon radish, jicama, turnips, etc.  I do the same for either frozen mixed fruit or apples.

I love things that go "crunch" and make dehydrated okra and overnight oat crisps to satisfy my craving.  Ultimately, I tend to save most of my eating for when I'm at home and comfortable.  This way I can better savor the food and pay more attention to what I'm eating. I typically have a couple of fruit and veggie protein blends waiting in the freezer for me after my daily salad.  There are numerous foods I use for a healthy and interesting blend, but I'll save that talk for next week's WIAW.

Happy WIAW!!

Breakfast – Not my standard "non-traditional" breakfast this time. I received a sample package of Amazing Grass to review (check tomorrow's post) and made a Kidz Green SuperFood protein smoothie with pumpkin, frozen banana, and stevia sweetened protein powder blended together. This was a luscious, thick smoothie that was gone too fast...yum! Of course I had the usual French Press coffee after.

Snack – Half of a Green SuperFood Chocolate Bar, baby carrots, and double bagged green tea with another bag of Rooibos tea.

Lunch – Millet Franks and Beans (recipe to come soon); dehyrdrated okra; baby carrots; frozen mixed fruit; Yogi Kombucha Green Tea

Snack – Amazing Grass Original Amazing Meal shake mixed with stevia and water

Dinner – Steamed beets and Brussels Sprouts (jewels in my veggie kingdom) over a healthy bed of salad greens and bean sprouts; pureed lentils and veggies with balsamic was my "dressing"; peanut butter pumpkin protein smoothie; overnight oats with Amazing Grass Chocolate Green SuperFood, unsweetened cocoa powder, and vanilla whey protein with stevia mixed in with plain, non-fat Greek yogurt.

Wow, the cool, creamy oats with silky chocolate are simply devine! Next time I'll add a mashed banana to increase the comfort food factor another notch; kinda like the Sleep Number of food!

I've enjoyed the Amazing Grass samples I received free of charge, and expect to have my product review posted by tomorrow.

Q: Did you used to eat or drink certain things as a kid that you are repulsed by today?

  1. I used to love apple juice and now I absolutely cannot stand it. (unless it's fresh from a juicer) I guess that's what happens when you become an organic, fresh food loving brat! those beanitos look splendid though!

    2. Mmmm, fresh AJ is definitely the way to go! I'm with you on being a food-loving "snob", but it's for good reason. We demand quality for our bodies!

Thanks for reading and happy wiaw!

    1. I think it's basically just a toned down version of the adult mix, but it's good all the same. Smoothies are a staple for me; specifically thick smoothies that need a spoon!

Thanks for reading and have a great day!

  5. the dressing for dinner sounds really interesting! I'd try that. and looking forward to the frank and beans recipe... I have some veggie smoked sausage that I bet would work. and overnight oats are totally a comfort food. much better than the junk foods I ate growing up. anything bagged or processed was probably what I favored every day. thank god tastes really can change. :-)

    1. I'm sure you'd love the dressing, and you can puree any of your favorite beans, lentils, and veggies together to have something new each time! Homemade salsa is another favorite "dressing" of mine.

It's hard to believe some of the things I would eat without questioning anything. Now I question everything!

I plan to have the franks and beans recipe posted by Friday and hope you'll come back to try it!

    1. Ha ha, thank you for sharing! I think we've all been there. I used to grab several slices of white sandwich bread and press them into a thick ball to eat like an apple. This was as I laid in bed on a school night....ridiculous!

I think I'm guilty of the butter thing too. Oh well, at least we're looking "back" at that and have changed for the better.

Thanks for the compliment! : )
